Welcome to The Black Star Journal – Who We Are and What We Do:

The Black Star Journal (BSJ) is a newspaper founded in Spring 2022 that serves Brown and the Providence Community. The Black Star Journal is unique because it is run by a staff of over 60 Black Students and informs the wider community about the stories, narratives, culture, and news pertaining to the Black community within Brown and nationally. It spreads critical news and provides a safe space for Black students on campus to authentically share their stories and gather with other Black writers, creators, and artists. Many Black students on campus raised concerns that they did not have a safe space or community to pose their ideas, share stories about their culture, question pop culture, and express political views in a way that felt authentic to them. Self-expression is the key to happiness and humanity. The Black Star Journal aims to give every Black student on campus a platform to share their story with the world.

Founded by Amiri Nash ‘24 and Keiley Thompson ‘24, the BSJ has been featured in The Brown Daily Herald, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. The vibrant pages of the two issues last year were received very well by students and professors on campus and beyond. The goal of The Black Star Journal is also to preserve history. The BSJ is a living archive. future Black students will have easy access to discover what previous Black students at the university were doing from their perspectives. Often, we hear about the rich history of activism at Brown University, but what did day-to-day life look like for Black students? What were the everyday joys, triumphs, struggles, challenges, and promises of the past that led us to this current moment? Drawing from previous publications on campus such as The African Sun, B.O.P, and UWEZO, the BSJ hopes to create a sustainable archive for future students at Brown to learn about their history.

The Black Star Journal Needs Your Help:

However, the BSJ needs help. Although the BSJ is an official university organization, it does not yet receive enough funding from Brown to support its vibrant staff. The Black Star Journal currently receives $300 a semester from the University. However, it costs upwards of $1,000 per print. The BSJ currently prints four times a year, with the first print in October 2022. The Journal needs around $10,000 for the academic school year to have enough money for basic resources, community building activities, and to successfully print copies to distribute. The Black Star Journal positively impacts the lives of so many Black students on campus. Black Students from all over the world with concentrations ranging from Business & Architecture to English or Political Science have a space that fosters community, courage, and new ideas. Supporting The Black Star Journal financially is supporting the well-being, futures, and positive Brown experience of numerous students who are creative, passionate, and driven to make the world a better place.
